West Ham United continue to look at defensive additions before the transfer window slams shut next month but the latest name linked with a move to the London Stadium reeks of being a bit of a panic buy…
What’s the word?
According to the ever-reliable David Ornstein at The Athletic, the Irons are considering a move for Chelsea left-back Emerson Palmieri with David Moyes wanting additions in the role this summer.
It is not mentioned whether it would be a permanent or temporary switch with the 26-year-old currently valued at just under £22m by Transfermarkt. He’s also thought to be on wages of around £75k-per-week at Stamford Bridge.
Frank Lampard has reportedly put a £26m price tag on the Italian’s head with him surplus to requirements.
Panic buy?
However, this is not particularly a move that Moyes needs to make as the Blues outcast isn’t going to be a player that drastically improves that left flank.
In 15 top-flight appearances last season, Emerson averaged 1.5 tackles, 1.3 key passes, 1.2 interceptions and 0.9 crosses per game, via WhoScored.
These aren’t numbers that scream ‘sign me up,’ although some in east London will be tempted after his masterclass display against the Hammers back in 2019.
Emerson recorded two tackles, one interception, one clearance and managed an 88% passing success rate, keeping Marco Arnautovic quiet in the process during Chelsea’s 2-0 win. His only shot was blocked whilst he also lost give duels and gave away possession ten times, per SofaScore.
Antonio Conte labelled the Brazil-born defender as a “really good prospect” for Chelsea two years ago, but clearly with the addition of Ben Chilwell, his time at the club is wearing thin.
Whilst Sky Sports describe him as a player with “excellent speed, balance and dribbling skills” and despite admiring Lampard, he’s just not proven his abilities in the Premier League after only six goal contributions in 55 appearances.
Moyes must steer well clear of Emerson this summer.
AND in other news, West Ham flatter to deceive with interest in “absolute animal”…
